Who We Are

The Winchester Area SPCA is a 501c3 non-profit no-kill animal welfare agency that has served the community since 1907. The mission is to strengthen the human-animal bond and safeguard animals in transition. Over 1,300 homeless animals come through the admission center each year for emergency shelter services. The agency’s Pets for Life pet retention program keeps over 1,100 animals out of the overcrowded shelter annually by providing short-term financial assistance to pet owners in need.  The campus vet clinic provides affordable spay/neuter services for community cats and periodic vaccine clines for the public. The Winchester Area SPCA serves as the municipal shelter for the City of Winchester, VA and provides supportive services to surrounding counties as space and resources allow. WASPCA supports the mission of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies and their goal of Virginia becoming no-kill and was recognized as Humane Organization of the Year for 2025. The agency serves as an adoption hub for rescues and shelters throughout The Commonwealth. In addition, the agency hosts both volunteer and foster programs, reading and pet enrichment programs, community events, and humane education opportunities. WASPCA also operates a large thrift shop which serves the community by offering affordable products and special community events such as the annual Santa’s Workshop which serves approximately 300 children at the holiday season.
