Who We Are
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergency by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Vision Statement The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that... ...all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope; ...our communities are ready and prepared for disasters; ...everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products; ...all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed; and ...in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.
What We Do
Every day throughout the Shenandoah Valley, the American Red Cross is at work alleviating human suffering. Powered by a corps of dedicated volunteers and generous supporters—and guided by our fundamental principles—we are there for every imaginable crisis when it matters most: When a family’s home catches fire, the Red Cross provides lodging, food, comfort and more, bridging the gap between despair and hope. When a community is threatened by a disaster like flooding or a derecho, we quickly mobilize to deliver immediate relief including safe shelter, nourishing meals, health services, comfort and more. This critical aid keeps people safe and helps them get back on their feet as quickly as possible. When a cancer patient is fighting to survive, the Red Cross delivers lifesaving blood, wherever and whenever it is needed. The availability of blood and blood products can mean the difference between life and death. When a service member has an emergency and needs to reach family back home, within mere hours, the Red Cross helps connect them. We provide exceptional care from the day they enlist through their lives as veterans. When a loved one suffers a health emergency, a trained responder may be close by, thanks to lifesaving courses offered by the Red Cross. When a vulnerable child halfway around the globe is threatened by a deadly yet preventable disease, the Red Cross provides the protective measles and rubella vaccine. For about 140 years, the Red Cross has helped neighbors down the street, across the country and around the world. Today, we continue this legacy on a massive scale, aiding an average of 17 people every minute of every day.
