Who We Are

Rooted in faith and community, we are a ministry of Opequon Presbyterian Church committed to cultivating food, relationships, and hope. The OPC Community Garden started in 2011 as a partnership between the Opequon Presbyterian Church, the Highland Food Pantry, and Hedgebrook Farm. Since then, the OPC Community Garden has donated an excess of 10,000 pounds of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables to Highland Food Pantry and the food insecure in our community. After 10 years at Hedgebrook Farm, the garden was moved to church grounds and took on a new name. The name OPC Roots & Shoots was decided upon based on John 15:5. We are rooted in God’s love, and as we reach out to the community in all of our endeavors to lift our brothers and sisters in Christ, God’s love flows through us. The new garden has helped expand our outreach to positively impact more individuals and families in our community.

What We Do

Roots and Shoots is a volunteer-driven garden project that grows fresh produce for local food pantries and community organizations. Each week, we plant, harvest, and care for a variety of vegetables that directly support individuals and families facing food insecurity. Volunteers of all ages are invited to lend a hand, no experience necessary, just a willingness to learn and serve.
