Who We Are
The mission of The Clermont Foundation is to implement the provisions of the Williams deed of gift and trust, and to support education and research programs in preservation, agriculture, and public history at Clermont Farm, using its cultural landscape for the purpose of increasing contemporary engagement with history, historic preservation, and agriculture. These programs are planned and developed in partnership with Clermont’s owner, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and with local and regional partner organizations.
What We Do
The Clermont Foundation exists to preserve a historic place and bring it to life for today’s community. Clermont began in 1742, surveyed by George Washington in 1750, with many links to local, state, and national history. Located in Berryville, Virginia, in the heart of Clarke County, we are dedicated to protecting Clermont’s history, caring for its land, and creating meaningful connections through education, public events, and volunteer service.
Our work is guided by a belief that history should be experienced, not just remembered. We serve our local community, visitors, students, and history lovers of all ages by offering tours, programs, and hands-on opportunities that make the past accessible and engaging. We also value environmental stewardship and are committed to preserving the natural beauty and cultural significance of the land for future generations.
Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization. Whether you enjoy working outdoors, engaging with the public, preserving historic spaces, or supporting operations behind the scenes, there is a place for you here. Volunteering with The Clermont Foundation means becoming part of a welcoming community that cares deeply about preserving the past while building a stronger future.
